How They Work

Cardiac Alert Dogs are trained to detect physiological changes associated with cardiac events — including changes in heart rate, blood pressure fluctuations, and the unique biochemical scents released before a cardiac episode.

These dogs provide their handlers with critical advance warning, allowing them to sit down, take medication, call for help, or move to a safe location before a potentially life-threatening event occurs.

Key Features:

  • Detects pre-syncope and arrhythmia warning signs
  • Alerts handler to sit or lie down before fainting
  • Can retrieve medication or a phone during an alert
  • Trained for POTS, vasovagal syncope, and other cardiac conditions

The Outcomes

Increased Independence

Recipients report significantly greater confidence in leaving home and engaging in daily activities without fear of a sudden cardiac event.

Reduced Emergency Visits

Early warning alerts allow handlers to take preventive action, dramatically reducing emergency room visits and hospitalizations.

Improved Mental Health

The constant companionship and safety net provided by a cardiac alert dog reduces anxiety and depression associated with unpredictable cardiac conditions.

Family Peace of Mind

Families and caregivers report reduced worry knowing their loved one has a trained alert partner at all times.

Success Story

"Before Kodiak, I was afraid to leave my house. Now I go to the grocery store, take walks, and even travel. He's given me my life back."

James & Kodiak

James was diagnosed with POTS at age 24. After being paired with Kodiak, he has not had a single unwarned fainting episode in over two years.
