How PTSD Service Dogs Help

PTSD Service Dogs are trained to perform specific tasks that interrupt and mitigate the symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. These dogs provide a constant, calming presence that helps their handlers feel safe and grounded in everyday situations.

We work with veterans, first responders, survivors of trauma, and others living with PTSD. Our dogs are trained to respond to the specific triggers and needs of each individual handler.

Tasks Trained:

  • Waking handler from nightmares
  • Performing room checks to reduce hypervigilance
  • Creating personal space in crowds
  • Providing deep pressure therapy during anxiety episodes
  • Interrupting dissociative episodes
  • Reminding handler to take medication

Training Timeline

1

Socialization

0–6 months

Puppy raisers expose dogs to diverse environments, people, and situations to build a confident, adaptable temperament.

2

Basic Obedience

6–12 months

Dogs master foundational commands and public access skills required of all service dogs.

3

Specialized Training

12–18 months

Dogs learn PTSD-specific tasks tailored to the needs of future handlers, including nightmare interruption and room checks.

4

Public Access

18–20 months

Dogs are tested in real-world environments — restaurants, stores, transit — to ensure reliable behavior.

5

Team Training

20–24 months

Handler and dog complete an intensive two-week training program, building their bond and learning to work as a team.

Success Story

"Ranger does room checks every night before I go to sleep. For the first time in years, I actually sleep through the night. He's not just a dog — he's my lifeline."

Marcus & Ranger

Marcus, a combat veteran, was paired with Ranger in 2021. He reports a dramatic reduction in nightmares, hypervigilance episodes, and social isolation since their placement.
